Worm GearBox

A worm gearbox (or worm gear reducer) is a compact, high-ratio power transmission device that consists of two primary components: a worm (a screw-like gear) and a worm wheel (a gear resembling a spur gear, but designed to mesh with the worm). This configuration transmits motion between non-intersecting, perpendicular shafts, typically at a 90° angle.

The worm, which is the driving component, rotates and its threads engage with the teeth of the worm wheel. This action converts the rotational motion of the worm into a slower rotational motion of the wheel. The key characteristic is the sliding contact between the worm and wheel teeth, as opposed to the rolling contact found in other gear types.

Gear Ratio: The reduction ratio is determined by the number of threads (starts) on the worm and the number of teeth on the worm wheel. For example, a single-start worm driving a 30-tooth wheel gives a 30:1 reduction ratio in a single stage.

  1. Worm (Input Shaft): Usually made of hardened steel for durability.

  2. Worm Wheel (Output Shaft): Often made of a softer metal like bronze or brass to reduce friction and wear.

  3. Housing: Encases the assembly, provides mounting points, and holds lubricant.

  4. Bearings & Seals: Support the shafts and contain lubrication.

  5. Vent Plug: Equalizes internal pressure.
